§ 648.205 VMS requirements.
The owner or operator of any vessel issued a limited access herring vessel or vessel issued an Areas 2/3 Open Access permit (i.e., Category A, B, or C) or Category E Herring Permit, with the exception of fixed gear fishermen, must install and operate a VMS unit consistent with the requirements of § 648.9. The VMS unit must be installed on board, and must be operable before the vessel may begin fishing. Atlantic herring carrier vessels are not required to have VMS . (See § 648.10(m) for VMS notification requirements.).
