§ 180.1051 - Combustion product gas; exemption from the requirements of a tolerance.

  • The insecticide combustion product gas is exempted from therequirements of a tolerance when used after harvest in modifiedatmospheres for stored product insect control on all food commodities (except fresh meat) with the following prescribedconditions.

    (a) The insecticide is produced by the controlled combustion in airof butane, propane, or natural gas. The combustion equipment shall beprovided with an absorption type filter capable of removing possibletoxic impurities, through which all gas used in the treatment of foodshall pass; and with suitable controls to insure that any combustionproducts failing to meet the specifications provided will be preventedfrom reaching the food being treated.

    (b) The insecticide meets the following specifications:

    (1) Carbon monoxide content not to exceed 4.5 percent by volume.

    (2) It is used or intended for use to displace or remove oxygen inthe storage of food, except fresh meat.
