    Notice of Lodging of Consent Decree Under the Comprehensive 
    Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act
    
        Notice is hereby given that on December 23, 1998, a proposed 
    Consent Decree in United States v. Southern California Edison Company, 
    Civil Action number F-98-5595 AWI SMS, was lodged with the United 
    States District Court for the Eastern District of California.
        In this action, the United States sought to recover past response 
    costs as well as future response costs incurred and to be incurred by 
    the United States at the Southern California Edison Visalia Poleyard 
    Superfund Site (``Site'') in Visalia, Tulare County, California. The 
    Consent Decree resolves claims pursuant to Section 107 of the 
    Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, 
    42 U.S.C. Sec. 9607, against defendant Southern California Edison 
    Company. In the proposed consent decree, the Defendant agrees to pay to 
    the United States $264,000 for past response costs which the United 
    States paid through February 28, 1998, and has also agreed to reimburse 
    the United States for all costs paid at or in connection with the Site 
    after February 28, 1998 that are not inconsistent with the National 
    Contingency Plan.
        The Department of Justice will receive for a period of thirty (30) 
    days from the date of this publication comments relating to the Consent 
    Decree. Comments should be addressed to the Assistant Attorney General 
    of the Environment and Natural Resources Division, Department of 
    Justice, Washington, D.C. 20530, and should refer to United States v. 
    Southern California Edison Company, D.J. Ref. 90-11-3-06062.
        The Consent Decree may be examined at the Office of the United 
    States Attorney, Eastern District of California, Federal Building Room 
    3654, 1130 ``O'' Street, Fresno, CA 93721, at U.S. EPA Region 9, 75 
    Hawthorne Street, San Francisco, CA 94105-3901, and at the Consent 
    Decree Library, 1120 G Street, N.W., 3rd Floor, Washington, D.C. 20005, 
    (202) 624-0892. A copy of the Consent Decree may be obtained in person 
    or by mail from the Consent Decree Library, 1120 G Street, N.W., 3rd 
    Floor, Washington, D.C. 20005. In requesting a copy, please enclose a 
    check in the amount of $7 (25 cents per page reproduction cost) payable 
    to the Consent Decree Library.
