Shipping Coordinating Committee International Maritime
Organization (IMO) Legal Committee; Notice of Meeting
The U.S. Shipping Coordinating Committee (SHC) will conduct an open
meeting at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, February 6, 1997, in Room 2415 at
U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, 2100 Second Street, S.W., Washington,
D.C. The purpose of this meeting is to report on the ninth session of
the International Maritime Organization (IMO)/United Nations Conference
on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) jointly sponsored intergovernmental
group of experts (JIGE), which met in Geneva from December 2-6, 1996,
to consider revisions to the 1952 Arrest Convention. This SHC meeting
will also prepare for the 75th session of the IMO Legal Committee,
which will be held April

21-25, 1997, in London, regarding financial responsibility or
compulsory liability and compensation insurance for seagoing vessels,
compensation for pollution from ships' bunkers, a draft convention on
wreck removal, and other matters. Finally, this meeting will be another
opportunity for interested members of the public to express their views
on whether the United States should ratify the Hazardous and Noxious
Substances Convention, adopted in London in May, 1996.
