SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: On September 29, 1995, the Commission
proposed two rules and amendments to a rule to improve the handling and
execution of customer orders.1 The Commission proposals were
intended to improve the opportunity of investors to obtain the best
execution possible for their orders. At the same time, the proposals
were designed to preserve the benefits of a competitive market
structure that has greatly enhanced market liquidity, transparency and
efficiency. The Commission requested that comments on the proposed
rulemaking be received by January 16, 1996.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recently, Commission staff has received many requests from
interested persons for an extension of time within which to comment on
the proposed rulemaking. In addition, a major snowstorm altered the
schedules of many places of business in the northeastern portion of the
United States last week.
In light of the substantial nature of the proposed rulemaking, and
the Commission's desire to consider the views of all interested persons
on the subject, the Commission believes that an extension of the
comment period is appropriate. Therefore, the comment period for
responding to Securities Exchange Act Release No. 36310 is extended
from January 16, 1996, until January 26, 1996.
By the Commission.
Dated: January 16, 1996.
Margaret H. McFarland,
Deputy Secretary.
