POSTAL SERVICE
Intent To Prepare a Programmatic Environmental Assessment:
Priority Mail Processing System
AGENCY: Postal Service.
ACTION: Notice of intent.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY: To aid in planning, the Postal Service intends to prepare a
Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) for its proposed Priority
Mail Processing System, pursuant to the National Environmental Policy
Act (NEPA). This PEA will assess the impact of this proposed system on
the human environment, both physical and cultural, which includes the
postal working environment.
DATES: Suggestions regarding issues or concerns to be addressed in the
PEA must be received on or before October 31, 1995.
ADDRESSES: Mail or deliver written comments to the Manager, Operations
Networks Redesign, U.S. Postal Service, 425 L'Enfant Plaza SW,
Washington, DC 20260-7165.
FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: Anthony M. Pajunas, (202) 268-3669.
SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The proposed Priority Mail Processing System
would implement a new Priority Mail processing and distribution concept
in several new Priority Mail centers along the East Coast. This
proposed system is needed to improve service because on-time delivery
performance is below the targeted level. This system would both
segregate Priority Mail from other mail classes and process and
distribute Priority Mail through dedicated facilities. Although in a
few instances new construction may be required, the facilities would be
preferably housed in existing commercial or industrial buildings.
Stanley F. Mires,
Chief Counsel, Legislative.
