National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics: Meetings
Pursuant to the Federal Advisory Committee Act, the Department of
Health and Human Services announces the following advisory committee
meeting.
Name: National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS),
Subcommittee on Standards and Security.
Times and Dates: 9 a.m.-5 p.m., December 8, 1998. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.,
December 9, 1998.
Place: Conference Room 800, Hubert H. Humphrey Building, 200
Independence Ave. SW, Washington, DC 20201.
Status: Open.
Purpose: Under the Administrative Simplification provisions of
Pub.L. 104-191, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act of 1996 (HIPAA), the National Committee on Vital and Health
Statistics (NCVHS) is required to study the issues related to the
adoption of uniform data standards for patient medical record
information and the electronic interchange of such information, and
report to the Secretary of Health and Human Services not later than
August 2000 on recommendations and legislative proposals for such
standards and electronic interchange. The NCVHS is the Department's
federal advisory committee on health data, privacy and health
information policy.
To assist in developing the NCVHS recommendations to HHS
relating to clinical data standards, the NCVHS Subcommittee on
Standards and Security, Working Group on Computer-based Patient
Records, has scheduled a public meeting on December 8-9, 1998 in
Washington, DC. At the meeting, the Subcommittee will seek advice on
how best to address the report and recommendations to HHS relating
to clinical data standards. For the meeting, the Subcommittee is
inviting specific individuals with knowledge and experience in these
areas to (1) provide their perspectives and advice, (2) address
specific questions relating to clinical data standards, and (3)
answer further questions from the Subcommittee. Other individuals
and organizations that would also like to submit written statements
to the Subcommittee on these issues are invited to do so at the
meeting. The tentative agenda for the meeting, as well as a
description of the panels of speakers, will be posted on the NCVHS
website: http://aspe.os.dhhs.gov/ncvhs, when available.
