AGENCY: Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Treasury.
ACTION: Notice and request for comments.

SUMMARY: The Department of the Treasury, as part of its continuing
effort to reduce paperwork and respondent burden, invites the general
public and other Federal agencies to take this opportunity to comment
on proposed and/or continuing information collections, as required by
the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995. Currently, the IRS is soliciting
comments concerning Form SS-8, Determination of Employee Work Status
for Purposes of Federal Employment Taxes and Income Tax Withholding.
DATES: Written comments should be received on or before April 16, 1996,
to be assured of consideration.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
Title: Determination of Employee Work Status for Purposes of
Federal Employment Taxes and Income Tax withholding.
OMB Number: 1545-0004.
Form Number: SS-8.
Abstract: Form SS-8 is used by employers and workers to furnish
information to IRS in order to obtain a determination as to whether a
worker is an employee for purposes of Federal employment taxes and
income tax withholding. IRS uses the information on Form SS-8 to make
the determination.
Current Actions: There are no changes being made to the form at
this time.
Type of Review: Extension of OMB approval.
Affected Public: Businesses, individuals, Federal Government,
farms, state, local or tribal government, and not-for-profit
institutions.
Estimated Number of Respondents: 9,730.
Estimated Time Per Respondent: 35 hrs., 41 min.
Estimated Total Annual Burden Hours: 347,264.
REQUEST FOR COMMENTS: Comments submitted in response to this notice
will be summarized and/or included in the request for OMB approval. All
comments will become a matter of public record. Written comments should
address the accuracy of the burden estimates and ways to minimize
burden including the use of automated collection techniques or the use
of other forms of information technology, as well as other relevant
aspects of the information collection request.
