SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
Background
Historically known from a few locations in the northern Diablo
Range, part of the Inner South Coast Range of California, natural
populations of the large-flowered fiddleneck are currently restricted
to western San Joaquin and eastern Alameda Counties. Reintroductions
have been made in San Joaquin and Contra Costa Counties. Critically low
number of individuals due to the loss of habitat from urban and
agricultural conversion and live-stock grazing, environmental and
genetic stochasticity, and competition or interference from associated
plants (mostly non-native weeds) imminently threaten the continued
existence of Amsinckia grandiflora. The primary objectives of the draft
recovery plan are to stabilize the long-term status and ensure the
viability of the species in the wild, thereby enabling the large-
flowered fiddleneck to be downlisted.
The comment period on the draft recovery plan originally closed on
February 8, 1994 (58 FR 64963). Written comments may now be submitted
until April 4, 1994, to the above Sacramento, California address.
