American Indian Sacred Sites Consultation Meetings
AGENCY: Office of the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs, Office of
the Secretary of Interior.
ACTION: Notice of federal-tribal government-to-government consultation
on Executive Order No. 13007--Indian Sacred Sites.

SUMMARY: The Department of the Interior hereby gives notice of three,
two-day federal-tribal consultation sessions on the implementation of
President Clinton's Executive Order No. 13007--Indian Sacred Sites. The
Executive Order calls for the development of policies and procedures to
protect Indian sacred sites on federal lands and to assure American
Indians and Alaska Natives access to the sites. The Departments of
Justice, Energy and Agriculture have accepted Interior's invitation to
participate in the consultation sessions, as well. Tribal leaders or
representatives are invited to attend one of the three sessions.
A discussion group format along with opening and closing plenary
sessions will be used to ensure that each tribal representative has the
opportunity to speak and engage in open dialogue with federal
representatives. Discussion topics will include: Protecting the
Physical Integrity of Indian Sacred Sites; Concerns with regard to
Confidentiality of Indian Sacred Sites; Effecting Accommodation;
Dispute Resolution; and Meaningful Government-to-Government
Coordination, among others.
Any tribe unable to participate in the sessions is encourage to
send written comments on the implementation of the Executive Order and
the topics listed above no later than April 11, 1997. All written
comments will be given equal consideration in the preparation of
implementing policies and procedures.
DATES AND LOCATIONS: Portland Consultation Session will be held on
March 12-13, 1997 at the Red Lion Jentzen Beach Hotel, 909 N. Hayden
Drive, Portland, Oregon.
Denver Consultation Session will be held on March 19-20 at the Red
Lion Hotel-Denver, 3203 Quebec Street, Denver, Colorado.
Washington, D.C. Consultation Session will be held on April 3-4,
1997 at the U.S. Geological Survey Headquarter Office, 12201 Sunrise
Valley Drive, Reston, Virginia.
