COMMISSION ON IMMIGRATION REFORM
Washington, D.C. Consultations
AGENCY: U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform.
ACTION: Announcement of commission consultations.

This notice announces consultations to be held by the U.S.
Commission on Immigration Reform in Washington, DC on February 23 and
February 24, 1995. The Commission, created by Section 141 of the
Immigration Act of 1990, is mandated to review the implementation and
impact of U.S. immigration policy and report its findings to Congress.
An interim report, U.S. Immigration Policy: Restoring Credibility, was
issued on September 30, 1994; the final report is due in 1997.
The consultation participants will include the Commissioners,
researchers, government officials, representatives of business, labor,
community, ethnic, and religious organizations, and other interested
parties. Panels on the first day will examine labor market and
employment-based immigration issues. The Commission seeks to gain
greater understanding of the effects of legal immigration on the labor
market, the objectives and priorities for permanent and temporary
workers and procedures for testing the labor market. Panels on the
second day will focus on family reunification, including admission
priorities, categories, numbers, backlogs, and likely future trends.
Policies to be examined include the criteria used for determining who
qualifies for family reunification and its impact on U.S. society and
economy.
