Ciba-Geigy Corp.; Withdrawal of Food Additive Petition
AGENCY: Food and Drug Administration, HHS.
ACTION: Notice.

SUMMARY: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing the
withdrawal, without prejudice to future filing, of a food additive
petition (FAP 8B4079), filed by Ciba-Geigy Corp., proposing that the
food additive regulations be amended to provide for the safe use of
N,N'-(2-chloro-1,4-phenylene)bis[4-[(2,5-dichlorophenyl)azo]-3-hydroxy-
2-naphthalenecarboxamide] as a colorant for food-contact polymers.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: In a notice published in the Federal
Register of July 20, 1988 (53 FR 27399), FDA announced that a food
additive petition (FAP 8B4079) had been filed by Ciba-Geigy Corp.,
Three Skyline Dr., Hawthorne, NY 10532 (currently, c/o

1001 G St. NW., suite 500 West, Washington, DC 20001. The petition
proposed to amend the food additive regulations in Sec. 178.3297
Colorants for polymers (21 CFR 178.3297) to provide for the safe use of
N,N'-(2-chloro-1,4-phenylene)bis[4-[(2,5-dichlorophenyl)azo]-3-hydroxy-
2-naphthalenecarboxamide] as a colorant for food-contact polymers.
Ciba-Geigy Corp. has now withdrawn the petition without prejudice to a
future filing (21 CFR 171.7).
