    SUMMARY: On March 30, 1998, (63 FR 15233) the NRC published for public 
    comment a proposed generic letter concerning the identification of a 
    discrepancy in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code 
    inspection requirements regarding the inservice inspection of those 
    portions of the high-pressure safety injection system piping designated 
    as Code Class 1 with nominal pipe sizes between 4 inches and 1\1/2\ 
    inches, inclusive, and the need for addressees to maintain the 
    integrity of this reactor coolant pressure boundary piping in 
    accordance with the provisions of their current facility licensing 
    bases and report to the NRC their previous actions for verifying the 
    integrity of the subject piping and their plans regarding future 
    inspections. The comment period for this proposed generic letter was 
    originally scheduled to expire on April 29, 1998. In a letter dated 
    March 31, 1998, the Nuclear Energy Institute requested a 30-day

    extension of the comment period to permit sufficient time to reach 
    consensus on a coordinated industry response. In response to this 
    request, the NRC has decided to extend the comment period.
    
    DATES: The comment period has been extended 30 days and will now expire 
    on May 29, 1998. Comments submitted after this date will be considered 
    if it is practical to do so, but assurance of consideration cannot be 
    given except for comments received on or before this date.
