Extension of Currently Approved Information Collection for
Geophysical Prospecting Permit
AGENCY: Forest Service, USDA.
ACTION: Notice of intent; request for comments.

SUMMARY: In accordance with the Paperwork Reduction of 1995, this
notice announces the Forest Service's intention to extend, under OMB
Number 0596-0089, collection of information necessary to authorize
geophysical investigations on lands managed by the agency. Using the
Application for Prospecting Permit Form R1-FS-2800-4 (formerly R1-FS-
2860-1), applicants describe the type and size of the proposed
geophysical operation, the location, the equipment that would be used,
and addresses and phone numbers for the applicant and responsible local
representative. Applicants could include mineral lessees, oil and gas
operators, and geophysical contracting companies. The information is
used in an environmental analysis prior to making a decision on the
request for permit.
DATES: Comments must be received in writing on or before June 17, 1996.

Estimate of Burden: Public reporting burden for this collection of
information is estimated to be 15 minutes per response.
Type of Respondents: Oil & gas companies, mineral lessees,
geophysical companies, education or research organizations.
Estimated Number of Respondents: 20 per year.
Estimated Number of Responses per respondent: 1.
Estimated Total Annual Burden on respondents: 5 hours.
Comments Are Invited On
(a) Whether the proposed collection of information is necessary for
the proper performance of the functions of the agency, including
whether the information will have practical utility; (b) the accuracy
of the agency's estimate of the burden of the proposed collection of
information including the validity of the methodology and assumptions
used; (c) ways to enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the
information to be collected; and (d) ways to minimize the burden of the
collection of information on respondents, including the use of
automated, electronic, mechanical, or other technological collection
techniques or other forms of information technology.
Use of Comments
All comments received in response to this notice will be summarized
and included in the request for OMB approval. All comments will also
become a matter of public record.
