SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
Authority
This action is authorized under the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe
Streets Act of 1968, Secs. 201-03, as amended, 42 U.S.C. 3721-23
(1994). Beginning in fiscal year 1999, up to 10 percent of the funds
provided under Section 20104 of Subtitle C--Report on Streamlining
Federal Prevention and Treatment Efforts may be allocated by States to
offender drug testing-interdiction and treatment programs.
Background
This request for proposals announces a fourth year of support for
research and evaluation that will further understanding about
correctional policies and programs, sentencing, and impacts related to
sentencing legislation. Support for this research and evaluation
program is provided under the Violent Offender Incarceration and Truth-
in-Sentencing Acts (Title II, Subtitle A ) of the Violent Crime Control
and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, as amended. The request responds to
Congressional and public demand for a knowledge base that examines
correctional policy, accountability in sentencing and recommendations
for improvements. This fourth year of funding will support up to
$1,500,000 in projects that will complement the previously funded
national evaluation of the primary sentencing initiatives in the Act.
Applications are sought for correctional managment studies, drug
testing-interdiction and sanctioning research projects, and
practitioner-initiated research partnerships that will contribute to
the understanding of the impact and effectiveness of State and local
correctional issues and sentencing initiatives that are generalizable
to other jurisdictions.
