    Period for the Proposed Rule Change by the National Association of 
    Securities Dealers, Inc. Relating to the Establishment of an Agency 
    Quotation in Nasdaq
    
    April 1, 1999.
        On February 3, 1999, the National Association of Securities 
    Dealers, Inc. (``NASD'' or ``Association'') through its wholly owned 
    subsidiary the Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. (``Nasdaq'') filed with the 
    Securities and Exchange Commission (``Commission'') a proposal to 
    permit the separate display of customer orders by market makers in 
    Nasdaq through a market maker agency identification symbol (``Agency 
    Quote''). Notice of the proposed rule change was published for comment 
    on March 11, 1999.\1\

        To give the public additional time to comment on the proposal, the 
    Commission is extending the comment period for the NASD's Agency Quote 
    proposal to June 1, 1999. A copy of the proposed rule change is 
    available in the Commission's Public Reference Room in File No. SR-
    NASD-99-09.
        Interested persons are invited to submit written data, views, and

    arguments concerning the foregoing, including whether the proposed rule 
    change is consistent with the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. Persons 
    making written submissions should file six copies thereof with Jonathan 
    G. Katz, Secretary, Securities and Exchange Commission, 450 Fifth 
    Street, NW., Washington, DC 20549-0609. Copies of the submission, all 
    subsequent amendments, all written statements with respect to the 
    proposed rule change that are filed with the Commission, and all 
    written communications relating to the proposed rule change between the 
    Commission and any person, other than those that may be withheld from 
    the public in accordance with the provisions of 5 U.S.C. 552, will be 
    available for inspection and copying in the Commission's Public 
    Reference Room. Copies of such filings will also be available for 
    inspection and copying at the principal office of the NASD. All 
    submissions should refer to File No. SR-NASD-99-09 and should be 
    submitted by June 1, 1999.
