FEDERAL MARITIME COMMISSION
[Petition P3-99]
Petition of China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company for a Partial
Exemption From the Controlled Carrier Act; Extension of Time
On April 8, 1999, the Commission published notice of the filing of
a petition by China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) seeking a partial
exemption from the controlled carrier provisions of the Shipping Act of
1984, as amended. (64 FR 17181) Replies to the COSCO petition are due
on May 7, 1999. Sea-Land Service, Inc. and American President Lines,
Ltd., seek a 90-day extension of the comment period. COSCO opposes the
requested extension.
Due to the press of other business, there will be some delay before
the Commission considers the petition; thus, there appears to be no
valid reason to deny a reasonable extension. Accordingly, the date set
for replies to this proceeding is extended to July 6, 1999.
Replies shall consist of an original and 15 copies, be directed to
the Secretary, Federal Maritime Commission, Washington, D.C. 20573-
0001, and be served on counsel for Petitioner, Richard D. Gluck, Esq.,
Garvey, Schubert & Barer, 1000 Potomac Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.
20007.
Copies of the petition are available for examination at the
Washington, D.C. office of the Secretary of the Commission, 800 North
Capitol Street, N.W., Room 1046.
Bryant L. VanBrakle,
Secretary.
