    Proposed rule; extension of comment period.

    SUMMARY:

    On March 3, 2022, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requested comments on the proposed amendments to its regulations that relate to the decommissioning of production and utilization facilities. The public comment period was originally scheduled to close on May 17, 2022. The NRC is extending the public comment period to allow more time for members of the public to develop and submit their comments.

    The comment period for the proposed rule published March 3, 2022 at 87 FR 12254 is extended. Comments should be filed no later than August 30, 2022. Comments received after this date will be considered, if it is practical to do so, but the NRC is able to ensure consideration only for comments received on or before this date.

    II. Discussion

    On March 3, 2022, the NRC solicited comments on the proposed amendments to its regulations that relate to the decommissioning of production and utilization facilities. The NRC's goals in amending these regulations are to maintain a safe, effective, and efficient decommissioning process; reduce the need for license amendment requests and exemptions from existing regulations; address other decommissioning issues deemed relevant by the NRC; and support the NRC's Principles of Good Regulation, including openness, clarity, and reliability.

    The public comment period was originally scheduled to close on May 17, 2022. The NRC has decided to extend the comment period for the proposed rule until August 30, 2022, to allow more time for members of the public to submit their comments.
