Abstract: The Federal Aid in Fish Restoration Act and the Federal
Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act provide that funds are apportioned to
the States in accordance with a prescribed formula. One factor in the
apportionment formula for each Act is the number of paid fishing/
hunting license holders in each state. The acts require State Fish and
Game Departments to certify the number of paid hunting and sport/
recreational fishing license holders prior to the fiscal year for which
the apportionment is made. The information collected is used by the
Service to compute the apportionment of grant funds available to each
State as provided by the statutory formulae. The information on license
sales is made available to the public through a news release. It is
used by the Service and the public as indicators of trends in sport
hunting and fishing and has been compiled and distributed for many
years.
