AGENCY: National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Commerce.
ACTION: Issuance of Scientific Research Permits Nos. 954 (P492A) and
955 (P492B).

SUMMARY: Notice is hereby given that Dr. Graham Worthy and Co-
investigators Mr. Alan Abend and Ms. Lisl Shoda have been issued
permits No. 954 and 955, to obtain and import/export marine mammal
specimens and to take specimens from rehabilitated elephant seals,
respectively, for purposes of scientific research.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: On March 10, 1995, notice was published in
the Federal Register (60 FR 13121) that applications had been filed by
the above named individuals to obtain tissue samples for scientific
research purposes. The requested Permits have been granted under
authority of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, as amended (16
U.S.C. 1361 et seq.), the Regulations Governing the Taking and
Importing of Marine Mammals (50 CFR part 216), the Endangered Species
Act of 1973, as amended (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.), and the regulations
governing the taking, importing, and exporting of
[[Page 27494]] endangered fish and wildlife (50 CFR part 222).
Issuance of permit No. 954 as required by the Endangered Species
Act of 1973, as amended, was based on a finding that such permit: (1)
Was applied for in good faith; (2) will not operate to the disadvantage
of the endangered species which is the subject of the permit; and (3)
is consistent with the purposes and policies set forth in section 2 of
the Endangered Species Act.
