AGENCY: National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Commerce.
ACTION: Scientific research permit modification no. 2.

SUMMARY: Notice is hereby given that a request for modification of
scientific research permit no. 868 submitted by Dr. Norihisa Baba,
National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries, Ministry of
Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 5-7-1 Orido, Shimizu, Shizuoka
424, Japan, has been granted.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: On March 19, 1996, notice was published in
the Federal Register (61 FR 11194) that a modification of permit no.
868, issued July 19, 1993 (58 FR 39525), had been requested by the
above-named individual. The requested modification has been granted
under the authority of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, as
amended (16 U.S.C. 1361 et seq.), the provisions of Section 216.33(d)
and (e) of the Regulations Governing the Taking and Importing of Marine
Mammals (50 CFR part 216), the Fur Seal Act of 1966, as amended (16
U.S.C. 1151 et seq.), and fur seal regulations at 50 CFR part 215.
Permit no. 868 has been modified to extend the effective date
through September 30, 1999.
