Emergency Exemption: Issuance
On 14 June 1996, a permit, US 816181, was issued to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia to import 20 tissue
samples from one male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) that died at Gombe
National Park, Tanzania, for diagnostic virology. The 30-day public
comment period required by the Endangered Species Act was waived in
accordance with section 10(c) of the Endangered Species Act. The Fish &
Wildlife Service determined that an emergency affecting the health and
life of other chimpanzees existed and no reasonable alternative was
available to the applicant.
