    AGENCY: Food and Drug Administration, HHS.
    
    ACTION: Notice.

    SUMMARY: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing that 
    General Electric Co. has filed a petition proposing that the food 
    additive regulations be amended to change the intrinsic viscosity 
    specifications for poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) oxide resins 
    intended for use in contact with food.

    SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: Under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic 
    Act (sec. 409(b)(5) (21 U.S.C. 348(b)(5))), notice is given that a food 
    additive petition (FAP 7B4551) has been filed by General Electric Co., 
    One Lexan Lane, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620-9364. The petition proposes to 
    amend the food additive regulations in Sec. 177.2460 Poly(2,6-dimethyl-
    1,4-phenylene) oxide resins to change the intrinsic viscosity 
    specifications for the poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) oxide resins 
    intended for use in contact with food from ``not less then 0.40 
    deciliter per gram'' to ``not less than 0.30 deciliter per gram'' as 
    determined by ASTM method D1243-79.
        The agency has determined under 21 CFR 25.24(9) that this action is 
    of the type that does not individually or cumulatively have a 
    significant effect on the human environment. Therefore, neither an 
    environmental assessment nor an environmental impact statement is 
    required.
