AGENCY: National Park Service, Department of the Interior.
ACTION: Notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement
for the California and Pony Express National Historic Trails General
Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statements, California and Pony
Express National Historic Trails.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY: Under the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act,
the National Park Service is preparing an environmental impact
statement for the California and Pony Express National Historic Trails
General Management Plan/ Environmental Impact Statement for California
and Pony Express National Historic Trails.
The effort will result in a comprehensive general management plan
that encompasses preservation of natural and cultural resources,
visitor use and interpretation, roads, and facilities. In cooperation
with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S.D.A. Forest Service,
Bureau of Land Management, and the sovereign Native American Tribes
with lands adjacent to the trails, attention will also be given to
resources adjacent to the trails that affect the integrity of the
California and Pony Express National Historic Trails. Alternatives to
be considered include no-action and a range of alternatives from which
the preferred alternative will be selected.
Major issues include cooperative agreements with land management
agencies and private land owners for visitor use and trail
preservation; identification of historic sites and trail segments;
development of a consistent management strategy for the trails, which
can be easily implemented by land owners and land management agencies.
A scoping brochure has been prepared that details the issues
identified to date. Copies of that information can be obtained from the
Denver Service Center (TCE), Attn: Patrick O'Brien, P.O. Box 25287,
Denver, Colorado 80225-0287; (303) 969-2458.
