Shipping Coordinating Committee: International Maritime
Organization (IMO) Legal Committee; Notice of Meeting
The U.S. Shipping Coordinating Committee (SHC) will conduct an open
meeting at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, September 27, 1999, in Room 2415 at
U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, 2100 Second Street, SW, Washington, DC
The purpose of this meeting is to prepare for the Eightieth Session of
the International Maritime Organization Legal Committee (LEG 80), and
the Joint International Maritime Organization/International Labor
Organization Ad Hoc Expert Working Group, to held concurrently October
11-15, 1999 in London.
It is anticipated that LEG 80 will focus primarily, if not
exclusively, on completing its work on a draft protocol to the Athens
Convention, therefore the SHC will focus primarily on this topic at the
September 27 meeting. The Joint IMO/ILO Ad Hoc Expert Working Group
will be focusing on the subject of liability and compensation regarding
claims for death, personal injury and abandonment of seafarers,
therefore the SHC will also focus on this topic. Other topics that will
be briefly addressed include: the draft IMO Guidelines on Shipowners'
Responsibilities in Respect of Maritime Claims and a draft convention
regarding bunker fuel spills. Time will also be allotted to address any
other issues on the LEG work program on which there are questions or
comments.
