AGENCY: Special Presidential Panel on Military Operations on Vieques.
ACTION: Notice.

SUMMARY: The Panel will meet in closed session on August 27, 1999. The
Panel was chartered by the Secretary of Defense on 25 June 1999 to
provide advice and recommendations to him regarding the need for the
continuation of military operations on the island Vieques, Puerto Rico
and the extent to which alternative sites or methods are available that
would fulfill national security requirements. The Panel will meet in
closed session on August 27, 1999 to discuss classified national
security information related to Vieques.
In accordance with Section 10(d) of the Federal Advisory Committee
Act, Public Law 92-463, as amended [5 U.S.C., Appendix II, (1982)],
matters affecting national security, as covered by 5 U.S.C. 552
b(c)(1)(1988), will be discussed throughout the meeting, and
accordingly, the meeting will be closed to the public. Because of the
short timeframe of the panel's review, and the accelerated pace of the
meting schedule, this announcement must be made less than 15 days
before the meeting will take place.
