    Petition for Exemption

    Docket No.: FAA-2006-25156.

    Petitioner: Hawker Beechcraft Corporation.

    Section of 14 CFR Affected: § 25.981(a)(3).

Description of Relief Sought: Hawker Beechcraft is petitioning for a full exemption from the fuel tank safety provisions of § 25.981(a)(3), as amended by Amendment 25-102, regarding the structural lightning protection of wing fasteners. The requirements include consideration of factors such as aging, wear, and maintenance errors as well as the existence of latent failures in developing designs that prevent ignition sources in fuel tanks. Hawker Beechcraft is concerned that the additional safety benefit gained by re-designing to comply completely with the provisions of § 25.981(a)(3) for wing fasteners would not be commensurate with the additional costs.
