Applications for Duty-Free Entry of Scientific Instruments
Pursuant to Section 6(c) of the Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Materials Importation Act of 1966 (Pub. L. 89-651; 80 Stat.
897; 15 CFR part 301), we invite comments on the question of whether
instruments of equivalent scientific value, for the purposes for which
the instruments shown below are intended to be used, are being
manufactured in the United States.
Comments must comply with 15 CFR 301.5(a) (3) and (4) of the
regulations and be filed within 20 days with the Statutory Import
Programs Staff, U.S. Department of Commerce, Washington, D.C. 20230.
Applications may be examined between 8:30 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. in Room
4211, U.S. Department of Commerce, 14th Street and Constitution Avenue,
N.W., Washington, D.C.
Docket Number: 97-073. Applicant: Research Foundation of The City
University of New York, 79 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10003.
Instrument: Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectrometer, EMX Series.
Manufacturer: Bruker Instruments, Germany. Intended Use: The instrument
will be used for studies of Lithium-transition metal insertion
compounds; prefluorinated polymers prepared by chemical or radiation
crosslinking. Investigations will be conducted to determine the
correlation between EPR spectroscopic parameters and electrical
properties of the materials, the goal of which is to better understand
the atomic/molecular level processes associated with electrical
conductivity. Application accepted by Commissioner of Customs: August
21, 1997.
Docket Number: 97-074. Applicant: Case Western Reserve University,
School of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry, 10900 Euclid Avenue,
Cleveland, OH 44106. Instrument: Stopped-Flow Spectrometer, Model
SX.18MV. Manufacturer: Applied Photophysics Ltd., United Kingdom.
Intended Use: The instrument will be used to investigate the kinetics
of the interaction between biological macromolecules and ligands in
experiments conducted to: (1) Monitor the interaction between RNA
polymerase and double stranded DNA, (2) monitor the interaction of
cinnamoyl-CoA substrates with enoyl-CoA hydratase and (3) monitor the
interaction of transcription factors with ribosomes. Application
accepted by Commissioner of Customs: August 22, 1997.
