Title: Benchmark Survey of U.S. Direct Investment Abroad-1994.

Burden: 451,200 hours.

Avg Hours Per Response: 159.4 hours.
Needs and Uses: The purpose of the benchmark survey of U.S. direct
investment abroad is to obtain comprehensive data on the overall
operations of U.S. parent companies and their foreign affiliates, and
on positions and transactions between them. The survey is mandated by
Congress to provide a factual framework for addressing the concerns of
policymakers and the general public about the effects of direct
investment abroad on the U.S. and foreign economies. The data from the
survey will provide benchmarks for deriving current universe estimates
of direct investment from sample data collected in other BEA surveys in
nonbenchmark years. The data are needed to record the size of U.S.
direct investment abroad, measure changes in such investment, and
assess its impact. They are also required for compiling the balance of
payments, international investment position, and national income and
product accounts of the United States.

expenses in the United States. The data are needed primarily to compile
U.S. international accounts.

(foreign airline companies).
Frequency: Annually.

revenues and foreign expenses. The BE-37 is required to obtain
comprehensive data concerning United States airline operators' foreign
revenues and expenses. The data from both surveys are needed primarily
to compile U.S. international accounts.
