I support this measure, to allow importation of these products from Zambia. This is
a step in the right direction, as I feel it's important to encourage increased trade
with African nations. The safety measures mentioned seem appropriate for culling
out produce with pests that can potentially spread in the U.S.
Labeling of these products should reflect the nation of origin, as well as the
company in Zambia growing/harvesting these crops, for more complete awareness
of the source of the food you're buying, but also so that consumers can check out
the company for labor/environmental practices if they are concerned (and if they're
even able to find any of this out on the web).
Question: Has the PPO of Zambia agreed to provide the certification that is being
requested as part of this rule? I think any agreement should not put undue burden
on the harvesting companies or the PPO in Zambia in order to see out this
promise of opening trade.
