Elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth. In the wild, they walk many miles each day. Walking is necessary for these animals because it maintains the health of leg muscles and joints. Elephants in zoos are kept in very confined spaces. Since they do not have the option to walk for miles, most zoo elephants suffer from leg and foot problems. These medical issues eventually are fatal to many of these animals. Since zoos are not capable of providing the necessary space for elephants, these animals should be moved to more appropriate sites, like the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee.
