Delisting the permanent hot brand or the permanent tattoo would be a huge mistake. The hot brand can be spotted easily without running an animal down a chute and individually catching each one. In western South Dakota and other areas where there are thousands of head of cattle sold through a sale barn in one day, this would be nearly impossible to perform. An ear tag is not a permanent ID as they can get caught on trees and other things and easily be torn out. We replace many eartags each time we have cattle in the corral. If it wasn't for the tattoo and the brand we wouldn't know which number to retag the cow with.
