To Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board
Docket No ATBCB 2011-04
There is a lot of information subject to interpretation and unclear in the current and proposed standards related to accessible routes at T-Intersections. Please provide decisive requirements for mid-block crossings at T-Intersections. Consider expanding on “R206 Pedestrian Street Crossings”.
R206 Pedestrian Street Crossings. Accessible pedestrian street crossings are required at street corners and shall comply with R306. If terrain and space are adequate, provide mid-block crossings at T-Intersections.
Advisory R206 Pedestrian Street Crossings. All pedestrian street crossings must be accessible to pedestrians with disabilities. If pedestrian crossing is prohibited at a corner due to physical constraints prohibiting compliance at certain locations, detectable features should be provided such as, grass strips, landscaping, planters, signs with text “No Pedestrian Crossing”, chains, fencing, railings, or other barriers.
T-Intersections crosswalks are encouraged where physical constraints allow. If physical constraints prohibit mid-block crossing at all T-Intersections, selective mid-block crosswalks are encouraged at approximate intervals every 1000 l/f on the long block side of a T-Intersection.
