I believe that the proposed amendment to the importation of nonhuman primates is a valid proposal. I do think that continued testing of viruses should carry on, but not just limited to Old World countries. Primates can potentially be imported through other countries that don’t have such stringent regulations as the U.S., putting public safety at risk. It is perhaps in the best interest of the U.S. to have all nonhuman primates tested, no matter the country of origin where importation is from. Port of entries should also be constantly monitored for potential outbreaks.
I feel that it is also important to not reduce the amount of time for registration of nonhuman primates. This part of the regulation should not be amended, for the fact that the more frequent documentation is required, the less chance of potential problems there is. The primate market is growing with more people interested in taking in these small monkeys as pets for their families. I believe that the more difficult it is for somebody to own one of these exotic animals, the less likely they are to adopt them, or purchase them as pets.
