I am writing to urge you to rescind CMS 2287.
This take-away of federal funds from our neediest students was a bad idea from
the beginning. The fact that Congress passed two moratoria on this rule should
give you some indication that 2287 needs to be rescinded.
If this money were permanently taken away from our school districts, there would
be no funds to do outreach. We are at a time in history when so many people are
losing jobs, and there are large portions of the population that had never
considered that they would need this type of support. They may know little or
nothing about it, and outreach is essential to educate them. The funds released by
rescinding 2287 will provide the opportunity to educate people about this safety net
provided for their children. Additionally, school districts need the transportation
money that was threatened by 2287. As millions of dollars are cut from school
budgets, this funding source becomes absolutely essential in facilitating
transportation for students in order for them to receive the services that are so
critical to their well-being.
CMS 2287 was bad policy from the beginning. Please rectify the errors of the past
by rescinding it. Thank you!
