The best practice for caregiving is to allow the patient to feel hopeful and to alleviate anxiety. By denying the right of all loved ones to offer comfort in times of crisis, critical health care is denied. There is no excuse for limiting access to loved ones on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity -- bigotry may explain it, but this cruel abuse of power is an abomination without justification.
