I am a gynecologist in northeastern Massachusetts. I have been using electronic prescribing regularly for 5 years. I provide specialist services for numerous Medicare patients, for a variety of issues. Most of these patients are on a long list of medications prescribed by their internists. I rarely have occasion to prescribe medications for these patients. I have been told that if I do not generate 10 electronic prescriptions for Medicare patients by June 30 I will be subjected to a financial penalty. This is completely unfair. I assume the rule is an incentive to get doctors to use e-prescribing. Our practice is already using it routinely! It is completely unreasonable to penalize me because the services I provide to medicare patients often do not require prescriptions!
