Please, ensure that every state’s essential health benefits plan provides coverage for medical foods for the treatment of PKU under the chronic disease management category; and (2) ensure that people with PKU are not discriminated against based on their disability by denying coverage of medical foods. My children have organic acidemias similar to PKU and require special medical foods and formula to manage their health issues. Without this medical treatment, they are at a high risk of serious brain damage or death. Managing their diet with medical foods and formula is critical to their health, and the private costs of these medical foods and formula is akin to a mortgage payment.
