I am writing in submit my support for the proposed changes in permitting dietitians to order diet independently. This action will promote improved patient care by allowing prompt, efficient and effective nutrition care of patients. It would reduce delayed nutrition treatment, improve patient satisfaction (no more tracking down an MD to order Ensure or Boost that the patient already takes at home or offering ground meat that the patient requests because of poor dentition) and improve physician satisfaction by greatly reducing pages for ordersthey feel the dietitian should do themselves.
Given that most physicians readily state that they have very limited applied nutrition knowledge and would rather defer to the dietitian, this is a very positive move.
Thank you. Leslee Carver, RD, LDN, MSPH
