To Whom It May Concern:
I have read the proposed changes in the regulations for the cribs an infant is to sleep in and I am STRONGLY opposed to making this change in standards to be applied to the cribs already being used that have NOT ever been subject to a recall.
I am very supportive of changing the standards that will make cribs safer and protect consumers - Children are our most precious gift in life. Making these changes apply to cribs already in use - that are not on any recall list - is lavishness, overkill and wasteful to say the least.
I would liken this to making it a crime for people to drive/ride in any car than one of the 2011 5-star safety rated vehicles! What we have is not perfect, but far far more children die in unsafe vehicle than in cribs each year and we couldn't possibly afford to make every other crib already in use illegal!
The problems will the retroactively enforce standards include: 1) Parents and caregivers can not afford to replace every crib in this country!
2) Manufacturers can not possibly produce enough new cribs so the every infant could be sleeping in a new crib in the time frame of these proposed changes.
3) It is a disgrace to our planet to discard so much unnecessary waste.
4) The new crib standard may very likely turn up new unforeseen hazards.
Please reconsider the position of requiring all cribs in use to meet these new standards!
Thank you for you consideration.
Sincerely,
Lisa Thompson
