Crib bumpers are inherently dangerous...even the ones which are breathable. They represent unregulated safety devices that differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Furthermore, from a safety perspective, they make no sense because they act as a stepping stool for the child to get out of the crib. And most glaring is that the CPSC, the AAP, and virtually all safety organizations instruct consumers that soft bedding, pillows, toys, etc should be removed from a crib. Yet, baby bumpers (which act like pillows) are not outlawed. This makes no sense in light of the various agencies' stance against pillows and soft items in cribs. Children will obviously be occasionally injured by putting limbs through slats, but this is preferred versus suffocation and falling from a crib. Simply, the CPSC should be consistent in their approach, and outlaw bumpers altogether.
