I fully support DoD's proposal to encourage contractors to develop science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. To maintain technological superiority and enhance economic growth, we must build a healthy and quality STEM workforce. To secure our future, we must inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists, engage and educate the students in science and technology, develop and employ STEM professionals.
I would highly recommend to add the "Art" to the STEM efforts. Technology and art are tightly coupled. They share the same attributes in innovation and creativity. As you know, Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) and Aaron Schock (R-IL), and other members of the Congress are forming a caucus to promote STEAM. The STEM2STEAM national movement has been initiated by Dr. John Maeda of RI School of Design, and supported by the renowned educators such as Dr. Charles Vest, Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, et al.
The Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise (LITE) has been promoting STEM to STEAM education and outreach in the Acadiana area in Louisiana. A local newspaper, Independent ABiz, has published an article in September 2012 on STEAM. The link to the article is:

Also, we're initiating a STEAM education and outreach effort in the West End Community in New Iberia, Louisiana. The West End schools have one of the highest rate of students drop out in Southern Louisiana. Attached is our STEAM plan for the West End Community.
