One person wets their pants and everyone wears diapers!
Is this the appropriate response to the abuse of an anesthetic drug by medical personnel? Making Propofol a schedule IV drug will create added paperwork, supervision, storage, access, and supply hassles for veterinary clinics that routinely use this agent for induction, i.e. this action will increase the operating costs for veterinary clinics. State medical boards already have adequate tools to address the inappropriate use of drugs by medical personnel. Propofol is not a drug that is commonly abused by the general population, nor is it a typical target of thieves. There is also no issue with the safe administration of Propofol in an appropriate medical setting. It is unnecessary to assign Propofol as a schedule IV drug as the evidence is unconvincing that any human lives will be saved. Yes, a small minority of medical personnel will abuse drugs that they have access to within the clinic environment. Agencies and regulations currently exist to address this misuse. It is an added burden on the whole for the indiscretions of a few to over-regulate drugs without clear justification.
