Alfaxalone will allow veterinarians to administer anesthesia safely in cats and dogs. Its potential for abuse outside of the medical field appears to be low based on its anesthetic qualities and lack of a “high.” However, within the medical field it could be abused and therefore making it a Schedule IV drug would be appropriate.
The abuse of drugs used exclusively within the medical field is well documented. Because Alfaxalone is a CNS Depressant, it could be abused in a similar manner to other Schedule IV CNS Depressant drugs. The rule proposed by the DEA is both consistent and prudent to prevent the abuse and mishandling of Alfaxalone.
