It is important to allow successful and excepted bariatric procedures to be included for coverage to treat underlying medical issues. I believe this new amendment will clarify and acknowledge the medical procedures used today. Medical procedures have come a long way since 1982 when the original regulation was finalized, allowing for treatments that were not even imagined at that time. This amendment will open up better and more efficient bariatric procedures to many who are in need. It is also important to use the BMI index then height-weight table. Body mass index gives a clearer overall picture of an individual’s obesity; whereas height-weight table puts the individual in an average range. Overall, I think this amendment will open up help to individuals who are at risk due to their weight, yet does not expand benefits.
