I am an active duty Air Force officer stationed in the Las Vegas area. Like many of my peers I have strived to make the best financial decisions in order to provide for my family. Unfortunately, the current housing market threatens everything I've worked for. On 24 July 2006, I purchased my Las Vegas home and the current value of said home has since dropped almost 50%. I am due to PCS to Washington DC/Northern Virginia in June 2010 and need to start solidifying my financial options. The HAP isn't an option for me, since I purchased the property after the 1 July 2006 cut off. Unfortunately for hundreds of military members, the housing market didn't bottom out on the stroke of midnight July 2 2006. In hard hit areas, such as Las Vegas, the market continued to steadily drop with the steepest decline in 2008. I've heard several rumors that the program was being expanded and income tax considerations were being made. However, there's been no mention of expanding the Property Purchase cut-off date. This wonderful program needs further expansion or a waiver process for hard hit areas in the United States. I, like many of my peers, do not have an option to stay put and ride out the "housing market" storm. We have to move in order to continue to support our country. Problem is, what we currently owe on our homes threatens to wipe out our savings and possibly our future standard of living. Please help the hard working members of the Armed Forces by expanding the property purchase date and PCS order date to open this fantastic program to more well deserving Americans.
