Smoking Cessation Program under TRICARE

In reviewing the Smoking Cessation Program under TRICARE (Document ID DOD-2011-HA-0038-0001), I must say that I support this initiative, without reservation. Proven by extensive studies, tobacco use is the most preventable cause of death and approximately half of the people who don’t or can’t stop smoking will die of smoking-related problems. While long-term smoking can result in irreversible damage, individuals who quit will see benefits in a relatively short time. Some of the benefits include: improved circulation, better regulation of blood pressure, sense of taste and smell return and breathing becomes easier. As stated in the proposal, smoking and its related adverse effects challenges over two million TRICARE beneficiaries. Providing these benefits will be crucial in the longevity and improved health of active duty service members and their families. As a twenty-one year member of the United States Air Force, I have been personal witness to the problems and negative effects that tobacco use can cause to military members and their families. Offering a smoking cessation program under the TRICARE benefits makes complete sense. I agree with the availability to no-cost pharmaceuticals, smoking cessation counseling, 24-hour access to a toll-free quit line and access to print and internet based cessation material. I would also recommend working to provide this benefit to all overseas beneficiaries, since the added stress of maintaining a life without the family and support systems can lead to increased tobacco use. I appreciate the benefits available to us military members and our families and I feel approving this proposal will only add to the positive life we try to achieve, regardless of the situation. Thank you for your consideration and for reviewing my comments.
