I would like to inform you of the tremendous reaction of the North Country against this project. Coos County is the most economically depressed area in the state. Everything that employed people here is now gone: paper mills, Balsams latex factory, most of the Ethan Allen Furniture plant. The only resource left here is our beautiful countryside and now that will be devastated with a 150-400 foot gash covered with 135 foot towers. The last and only thing we have left here will be permanently disfigured. Already, five years in advance, people who visit are saying they will not come up here if they have to look at giant power lines. Even the Balsams Resort is being affected by this now.
You should know the the selectmen from all the towns are organizing themselves to stop this project the way it is now planned and several groups are being formed to do everything they can to prevent this exploitation from happening. It is felt that this a a fight to preserve our way of life and to keep the only resource we have.
Franklin, NH benefits greatly from this project, the people in Massachusettes and Connecticut benefit and the power companies and their stockholders benefit financially. The most common question asked here in the North Country is: What is our benefit?
Thank you.
