As a mother of a disabled 15 year old, I know the difficulties of trying to take my son on outings. I know of nowhere in my community that I could ever take him to enjoy a recreational activity. Playgrounds, swimming pools, and amusement parks are inaccessible to my son. My son enjoys water and movement. Currently, the facilities mentioned above have never taken into consideration children in wheelchairs and do not include items that they could use. Unfortunately, I do not see public entities voluntarily updating or including in new construction, that is not required by law, anything for disabled children or adults. The proposals are bringing people with disabilities another step closer to being recognized as members of their community.
