I write to support the immediate adoption of the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission’s standards.
The sooner they are adopted, the fewer men and women will be subject to the torment of prison rape. It is shameful that our justice system turns its eyes from such actions, particularly in what is considered a Christian nation. “Doing time” should never include being raped, which has immensely harmful physical and psychological consequences. This tragic offense is common in our prisons and is rarely dealt with. These standards offer practical ways to prevent prison rape.
The NPREC has studied the situation exhaustively. Further study is an unnecessary duplication of their efforts, which simply delays addressing an injustice that needs to be corrected as soon as possible. Please expedite acceptance of the NPREC’s standards, and in so doing truly promote justice.
